What are theta waves?

Theta is a label for relatively slow oscillatory brain activity, commonly discussed in a range around 4–8 Hz. Exact band definitions can vary across research conventions.

Theta is not a single mental switch

Popular marketing often treats “theta” as one uniform state. Real brain activity is more complicated: oscillations vary by brain region, task, stage of sleep, measurement method and individual.

Theta and meditation

Changes in theta activity have been reported in meditation research, but that does not mean every meditation produces the same EEG pattern or that externally presented “theta audio” reproduces a specific meditative state.

Theta and memory

Theta rhythms are an important topic in memory and hippocampal research. This makes the term attractive in marketing, but it does not establish claims that stimulating theta causes wealth, luck or business success.

What “7 Hz” means

Seven hertz falls within commonly used theta-band definitions. For binaural audio, a 7 Hz beat can be created from a 7 Hz difference between two audible tones. That is not the same as playing an audible 7 Hz tone by itself.
